2019 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough, New Zealand
In the glass, the 2019 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc presents a pale straw-gold with faint green highlights and brilliant clarity. On the palate, the wine is sleek and medium-bodied, driven by a spine of racy, mouthwatering acidity that carries flavours of passion fruit, grapefruit zest, and freshly sliced cucumber with admirable precision. The partial oak and lees contact adds a subtle creamy texture and a whisper of toasted brioche that lifts the mid-palate beyond the purely varietal. The finish is long, clean, and laser-focused, leaving a trail of citrus pith and chalky minerality that lingers well after the wine has left the glass.
Marlborough, New Zealand
Marlborough sits at the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, cradled between the Richmond Ranges and the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The region benefits from one of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand, tempered by cooling southerly winds off the Pacific and Cook Strait, which preserve natural acidity and extend the growing season. This dramatic diurnal temperature variation — warm days and cold nights — is the defining force behind Marlborough's signature intensity and precision.
Sauvignon Blanc, 100%
Sauvignon Blanc, rooted in the Loire Valley but reimagined entirely in Marlborough's volcanic and alluvial soils, expresses a uniquely antipodean character here — amplifying thiols and methoxypyrazines to produce the archetype of the modern New Zealand style. In the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, the variety delivers a electrifying tension between tropical exuberance and razor-sharp herbaceous precision.
Fruit is sourced from Cloudy Bay's estate and contracted vineyards across both the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, planted in a mix of free-draining gravelly alluvial soils over clay subsoils that stress the vines just enough to concentrate flavour. Grapes are harvested in small batches — picked at optimal ripeness to retain freshness — then whole-bunch pressed and fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures to preserve aromatic integrity. A portion of the blend undergoes partial fermentation in old French oak and on lees for several months, lending textural complexity without obscuring the variety's luminous primary character.
The nose opens with an immediate, vivacious burst of tropical primary fruit before yielding to classically Marlborough herbaceous and citrus notes, with a stony, mineral undercurrent suggesting the region's alluvial terroir.
The 2019 vintage in Marlborough was marked by an exceptionally warm, dry summer with well-timed autumn rains that allowed grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness without sacrificing acidity — producing wines of notable concentration and balance. Cloudy Bay, now celebrating over three decades as the wine that put New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the world stage, remains the reference-point bottling for the style, and the 2019 is among the most complete recent expressions. Ideal pairings include Marlborough Sounds green-lipped mussels, seared sea bass with salsa verde, Vietnamese soft-shell crab, or a classic fresh chèvre and herb tart.
