Sommelier Profile

Joël Martin Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut

Champagne, France

Serving8–10°C (46–50°F)
Drinking WindowDrink now–2031 (optimal window 2025–2029)

The colour is a luminous pale gold with fine, persistent effervescence forming an elegant cordon in the glass. On the palate, there is an immediate sense of precision — a taut, saline spine of acidity framing flavours of lemon curd, green apple, and poached white peach. The mid-palate broadens beautifully with hints of almond paste and fresh croissant from extended lees contact, before the finish draws long and mineral, leaving an almost chalky, mouth-watering persistence that invites another sip.

Region & Terroir

Champagne, France

Joël Martin is a grower-producer (récoltant-manipulant) based in Vandières, a premier cru village nestled in the Vallée de la Marne, where the river moderates temperatures and chalky-clay soils lend wines a distinctive tension and minerality. The appellation sits at the crossroads of three major Champagne sub-zones, drawing influence from the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs, and the Marne Valley itself. This terroir is prized for producing Champagnes of genuine site expression — precise, vinous, and deeply rooted in place.

Grape Varieties

Chardonnay ~60%, Pinot Meunier ~25%, Pinot Noir ~15% (cuvée-dependent; Blanc de Blancs expressions are 100% Chardonnay)

Chardonnay from the chalky soils of the Vallée de la Marne delivers a linear, citrus-driven architecture with remarkable tension and saline depth, while Pinot Meunier — the soul grape of this valley — contributes a supple, autumnal fruit roundness and a distinctly rustic elegance that separates grower Champagne from the grandes maisons.

Soil & Vinification

Grapes are harvested by hand from estate parcels on chalky-clay and limestone-rich soils, with gentle whole-cluster pressing to preserve aromatics. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to maintain freshness, with select cuvées seeing partial oak aging for textural complexity. Dosage is kept deliberately low — often Extra Brut or Brut Nature — to honour the purity of the terroir, and wines undergo extended lees aging well beyond the minimum requirement.

Aromatic Profile
White peach and yellow mirabelle plumFreshly baked brioche and toasted hazelnutsCrushed chalk and wet limestoneMeyer lemon zest and green appleDelicate white blossom and acacia honey

The aromatic profile opens with vivid primary citrus and stone fruit before yielding to secondary autolytic notes of brioche and toasted nuts, all anchored by a persistent tertiary mineral signature of crushed chalk that speaks eloquently of the Vallée de la Marne's limestone subsoil.

Notable Details

As a récoltant-manipulant, Joël Martin's wines reflect the idiosyncrasies of individual harvests with admirable honesty, making each vintage release a genuine document of the Vallée de la Marne's seasonal story. The Extra Brut dosage philosophy ensures these Champagnes reward cellaring of three to seven years beyond disgorgement, developing a creamy, oxidative complexity without losing their foundational freshness. At table, they are superb companions to Normandy oysters, langoustines with beurre blanc, delicate sushi, or aged Comté cheese.
