Sommelier Profile
Michel Arnould & Fils Millésime Grand Cru Verzenay 2019
Champagne, Montagne de Reims, Verzenay Grand Cru
In the glass, a luminous pale gold with fine, persistent effervescence betrays both quality and youth. The palate is taut and precise — a signature of Verzenay's north-facing exposure — with red cherry, lemon curd, and toasted brioche forming an elegant mid-palate of genuine complexity. The mousse is creamy yet refined, never cloying, and the finish is long, saline, and strikingly mineral, with the chalk of the subsoil leaving a lasting, appetite-whetting impression. At this early stage in 2019's evolution, the wine shows beautiful promise though still carries a firmness that rewards patience.
Champagne, Montagne de Reims, Verzenay Grand Cru
Verzenay is one of the most celebrated Grand Cru villages of the Montagne de Reims, perched on the north-facing slopes of the ridge at approximately 200–270 metres elevation. Its cooler, more austere mesoclimate — paradoxically facing away from the sun — produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary tension, depth, and longevity. The chalky Belemnite subsoil, draped in thin topsoil, imparts a piercing minerality and structural backbone that define the village's signature style.
Pinot Noir ~100% (or dominant blend with minor Chardonnay; typical of Arnould's Verzenay Millésime cuvée)
Verzenay Pinot Noir is celebrated for its structural gravitas and brooding dark-fruit intensity, balanced by a natural acidity that drives exceptional ageing. In the hands of Michel Arnould, a grower-producer whose family has farmed these Grand Cru plots for generations, the variety expresses a fine-boned power quite distinct from the more voluptuous Pinot of Aÿ or Bouzy.
Grapes are sourced exclusively from the family's own Grand Cru parcels in Verzenay, harvested by hand at precise ripeness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve varietal purity, with malolactic fermentation typically completed to soften the naturally high acidity of the north-facing terroir. The wine undergoes extended ageing sur lattes — a minimum of three years for a millésime of this ambition — before disgorgement at low dosage, preserving the wine's inherent tension and chalky mineral expression.
The nose opens with vivid primary red fruits and citrus before yielding gracefully to autolytic secondary notes of brioche and hazelnut, with a persistent tertiary thread of Verzenay's hallmark chalky minerality weaving through every layer.
The 2019 vintage in Champagne is widely regarded as one of the finest of the decade — a warm, generous year that nonetheless retained freshness thanks to cool nights, producing wines of exceptional ripeness and natural balance with flattering early accessibility yet genuine cellaring potential. Michel Arnould & Fils, a benchmark récoltant-manipulant of Verzenay whose wines are often overshadowed only by their outstanding value for Grand Cru quality, has crafted a wine that rewards both present enjoyment and a decade of further development. Serve alongside Brittany lobster bisque, aged Comté, or a classic roast poularde for a pairing of memorable harmony.
